Video-Makers Who Do Things Differently (Insider Story)
If you’re searching for video reviews of mattresses and other household items these days, you’ll find a seemingly limitless supply. But Jason and Jennifer offer something different: real-time American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation in each video for their website, J and J Reviews.
How Does an ASL Review Site Work?
“Other reviews have closed captioning, but that’s not the first language for the deaf community,” Jason says. “It would be just like you or me watching a movie or commercial in another language, with closed captioning in English. That’s fine, but we’d probably rather hear it, more often than not.”
In each review, Jason provides the spoken commentary, running down the features and pros and cons of each mattress, while Jennifer provides ASL interpretation, a skill she learned while working for the archdiocese of Washington. The couple launched their site, JandJreviews.com, in November 2018.
What Mattress Do They Sleep On?
The Colemans’ primary bed, the one they’ve been using for years, is a Sleep Number 360® i8 smart bed. “I was in the Marine Corps from 2006 to 2010. And after all that and the beating your body takes, I wanted to make it a priority to get the best sleep that I could,” Jason says. “I looked into Sleep Number—my older brother had one, so I ended up getting my own, around 2012. I loved it—just amazing comfort and I got great sleep.”
What Has He Learned From Tracking His Sleep With SleepIQ Technology?
Jason is also a big fan of the SleepIQ® app, which he monitors closely. “I like to be able to get up in the morning and see how I slept and what I did the day prior,” he says. “When was my workout? How late in the day did I have caffeine? What was my Sleep Number setting? And then what was my score in the morning? I’m just constantly trying to improve. That’s in my nature—I’ve just always wanted to find ways to improve and maintain my competitive edge. Because sleep really matters for the other two-thirds of your day.”
The SleepIQ app has helped Jason adjust his days to maximize his sleep. He keeps his workouts and caffeine intake on the early side, and has taken steps to keep the couples’ bedroom consistent and comfortable, while keeping tabs on his heart rate and breathing through the app. This helps him understand if he was restless or sleepless for a while.
The combination of the bed and app have been essential to Jason getting good sleep. Sleep Number gives him the information and ability to tweak both his daily habits and his nighttime environment, providing him that sought-after competitive edge.
“Sometimes, you just have a bad day—everyone has those,” Jason says. “But I try to adjust those factors that I can. And that’s what I think is so great about Sleep Number is that adjustability.”
Jason’s Sleep Number setting is 40 and Jennifer’s is 35.
Like diet and exercise, quality sleep is essential for optimal health and performance.
