How This Hair Stylist Cut Out Back Pain [Insider Story
Hi, Tiffany! First of all, can you tell us a bit about what you do? Are there any things about your job that would surprise people?
I’m a hair stylist, and people think it’s an easy job—we get to talk all day and hang out with our clients. But I work six to eight hours without a break, and I’m on my feet the entire time. I’m not just standing in one place, I’m moving around. I constantly have my hands up, I’m bending over sinks, I’m bending over my client. A lot of my core is always bent. We work hard.
Cutting kids’ hair is one of the worst things for your back, because you want to play with them and you want to bend over and get to their level and make sure they’re comfortable. And it takes a long time—kids don’t just sit still.
What sparked your decision to get a Sleep Number bed?
We got our bed three or four years ago, mostly because I have a lot of back issues. Every single night I had back aches when I was laying on my old bed. So I just kept thinking, “I need a Sleep Number® bed, I need a Sleep Number bed.” After a couple of months, we went and bought one. I knew I had to have one.
Is a Sleep Number bed worth it?
I’ve never had a back issue since I got our Sleep Number bed. Not even one night. I like the fact that I can make it go really soft. Honestly, when people go in our room, they go, “What’s wrong with your bed?” because it indents. But that’s what works for me. I put the bed on my credit card, and so [payments were] $60. And I always tell people, even if I had to pay $60 for the rest of my life to sleep this well, I would.
And you got Sleep Number beds for your kids, too?
Right. They’re five and nine [years old]. We’re in a smaller town, and when we tell people we got Sleep Number beds for our kids, they think we’re crazy because it seems expensive. But we know the beds will last—we’ll never have to get another one for them. It’s a good value.
Our daughter likes to sleep at a softer setting of 15, like I do. With our son, if his setting gets out of whack, he’ll get up a lot. When I can get him comfortable, he sleeps so much longer.
If you could sleep anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Joseph: It’s funny, because people are always asking us if we want to go camping, and Tiffany always goes, “Not unless I can bring my bed with me!”
Tiffany: I don’t even like staying at hotels. If we go on a day trip, I want to be sure I’m back in my own bed at night. I hate going anywhere. Maybe if you could put me on the beach, with my bed and a mosquito net, that’s what I’d do.
What’s your Sleep Number setting?
Mine is 15 and Joseph’s is 45, although he was more like an 80 for a really long time.
Thanks, Tiffany and Joseph!
