Daylight Saving Time: Help Pets Adjust
Your puppy can’t tell time, so how can he be affected by Daylight Saving Time? In the wild, animals are naturally in tune with the rhythms of day and night—think of the birds at your feeder every morning. But pets follow the schedules we create for them. If you wake at the same time every day to feed or walk Fido, he expects it. So imagine the confusion (and possible frustration) when things shift by an hour. What’s happening?!
Here are some tips to reduce stress and help them adjust to the new time.
- Gradually alter your pet’s schedule. If your dog or cat eats at the same time every day, begin moving his feeding time earlier by a few minutes a week or two before the time change.
- Vary your pet’s schedule. Walk or feed him sometime in the morning and/or evening, but not at 7 on the dot, for example, every day.
- Ignore your pet’s wake-up call. This may sound impossible, but eventually he will stop expecting to be fed at the same time every day. Call it a win for both of you!
